Fantastic evening's entertainment at
Holsworthy's Comedy Club
For those who
were not worried about the Champions League
semi-final last Wednesday there was a fantastic
evening's entertainment on offer at the HATS
Theatre, Holsworthy.
OMI Promotions
was staging its second Comedy Club following the
success of the first show which was held at the
theatre on March 26.
The evening of
comedy commenced just after 8pm with compere
Patrick Monahan. Patrick used his chatty and
friendly style to get to know the members of his
audience, attempting to get to grips with local
place names and way of life in the westcountry.
Patrick's
versatility, likeability and engaging stage
presence made him a popular host with the
audience who laughed from the moment he stepped
onto the stage to the minute he handed over to
Rob Heeney.
Rob's charming,
likeable, boy-next-door and inoffensive style
was a hit with the HATS audience. From stories
of working in IT, taking sick days, buying on
Amazon after a few drinks and introducing his
mum to Facebook, Rob had his audience in
stitches with his all too familiar tales.
Holsworthy was
privileged to have Rob in its theatre as he is
fast becoming a rising start of the comedy scene
and regularly performs at the country's top
stand-up venues.
After a short
interval, Patrick introduced the second and
final act of the evening, Ivan Brackenbury (aka
Tom Binns). Ivan Brackenbury is hospital radio's
flagship presenter. He presents the 'Disease
Hour' every week on Chesterfield and North
Derbyshire Hospital Radio.
In his tracksuit
and orange cap, Ivan played hilariously
inappropriate tunes dedicated to the sick and
the wounded, including Wet Wet Wet's "I feel it
in my fingers, I feel it in my toes" for a
patient recently paralysed in a ski accident,
and Coldplay's "Yellow" for a jaundice sufferer.
Ivan's creator
Tom Binns cut his teeth in comedy at the Comedy
Cafe in London and on the BBC Radio Comedy
Network. His first television appearances were
in 'Knowing Me Knowing Yule with Alan
Partridge', 'Friday Night Armistice' and 'Fist
of Fun'.
One of the
sketches Tom wrote or 'Trigger Happy TV' made it
into both the BBC and Channel 4 polls for best
comedy moment and TV moment of 2001. Tom also
presented the live breakfast show 'Ri:se' on
Channel 4.
After Ivan
returned back on stage for an encore, the mic
was handed back to Patrick who brought the
brilliant evening to a close.
The next Comedy
Club is being held in HATS on Wednesday, May 28
and with more top comedians from around the
country already booked, the show is not to be
missed. Tickets are on sale at the Old Market
Inn, Holsworthy.
Next month the
town will be welcoming compere Kevin Dewsberry,
who has performed sell out shows to critical
acclaim at the Edinburgh Festival and Battersea
Arts Festival, London; stand-up veteran Dave
Thompson, best known for playing Tinky-Winky in
the Teletubbies!; and James Dowdeswell, who is
booked by all the top clubs around the country.
Providing an
alternative evening out. The Comedy Club will
hopefully continue to go from strength to
strength.
